Main Entailments of Ideogram Use

Vervaeke talk on Cognitive Science-Convergence

At minute 3 he draws ideograms for “convergence” (which he equates to “trustworthiness”) and “plausible”.  I didn’t have an ideogram for “plausible” but this will, with a little tweaking, do nicely– thank you Mr. Vernaeke. Perhaps I can use it for an improved ideogram for “science”.  I note that what he draws would not work as “converge” (nor its mirror image, “diverge”) without the assumption of movement from left to right, which I generally do with my ideograms.

Cognitive science  converges toward ideograms, to my mind. In his book The Mind in the Body, Mark Johnson mentions the importance of image schemas, which I take to be natural ideograms. I think image schemas are indeed key in the working of the subconscious mind and a means of understanding, and that by consciously working with ideograms we strengthen our connections with our subconscious minds.

12/7/18 transcription

I just transcribed a page from Somatics by Thomas Hannah. I was pleased with how quickly I could write it and how compact it is. I came up with a right-on id for “prow” immediately.

Notes on Sadhguru advice for sleeping and waking

I took notes on this video in ids, my preferred way of writing. A few spontaneous new id creations arose, as is usually the case.  I love how ideas that have proven intractable, difficult problems to represent satisfactorily in ids are solved spontaneously, I think because my subconscious has been working on them. The subconscious does the work anyway! I often think of Mark Johnson’s contention that “image schemas” underly conceptualization and categorization.  What is an “image schema” other than a natural (proto-) ideogram?  I believe that by consciously working with ideograms one is working with one’s subconscious, improving it.  And if, as the cognitive scientists like Johnson and Lakoff say, 95% of thought is un(sub-)conscious, then improving the subconscious with conscious ideograms opens a royal road to improved mental integration and mental self-mastery.

decent, intelligent, and again on how wonderful what I am doing is

Writing things out with regular script is to me tedious, boring, slow, dead, while writing with ids is fast, exciting, vibrant, creative, rich, alive.

Comment on a Dr. Joseph Suglia aphorism on art

As I say in my note, as with my id for “contemplate,” I love it when I cut the umbilical cord of attachment to Latin roots, often a semantic ball and chain tying a word/idea to  outmoded and not-very-sensical Latin.  “Contemplate”: com-, here probably an intensive prefix (see com-), + templum “area for the taking of auguries”. The id, on the other hand, fixes the idea with accuracy, graphic vividness, and semantic elan (at least I think so).  Ideograms are freeing–a means of moving forward with English.

In grappling with a complex idea like this it seems worthwhile to have an image, at least as a starting point, not that it captures the whole thing.

10/20/18

I am still creating every day, just not sharing much.  I create ids constantly; they are a big permanent part of my mental makeup, a richly rewarding means of relating to words and ideas.  Here are some creations I made while lying in bed thinking a bit before rising and while going through the motions of making my coffee.

Scan0214

Notes:

in the second sentence “up” is a person standing beside a bed–more expressive than ordinarily written English!

the graphic opposite of rut given transcends ordinary English. We don’t have a word for that.  Ids are NOT merely a way of stupidly transcribing English; they create new takes on ideas and go beyond, adding linguistic freedom.
