Synecdoche, again

I say “again” because I think I’ve already made a post on synecdoche. Anyway, here is my latest. I don’t like the word “synecdoche” — it’s from Greek and I don’t think the roots of the word add up to the intended meaning very well: “together, out, seem,” or something like that. I think the term obscures the meaning and makes it less accessible — it sounds like something highfalutin and hard. But it is just referring to a part of something to mean the whole. “Partforwhole” would be better! I use the device all frequently in ids. It is a way of abbreviating and conveying the meaning compactly.
